1. Off to the Races

If you’re a fan of speed, Richmond County is your kind of place. Rockingham Speedway, nicknamed The Rock, has been hosting a variety of NASCAR and other racing events since 1965, drawing thousands of enthusiasts.

If head-to-head racing is your passion, Rockingham Dragway sits next to The Rock and offers a full slate of NHRA and specialty events throughout the year. Watch riders flying high and slinging dirt at Windy Hill Sports, where motocross racers from around the country traverse a 1.5-mile track.

2. Discovery Place Kids

Kids rule at the unique Discovery Place Kids, which is designed to spark a love for learning. Interactive exhibits, hands-on programs and immersive experiences captivate youngsters. Fan favorites are the Astronomy Research Station and Nature Research Station, which explore the stars and Earth.

Situated in downtown Rockingham, the center’s live science shows are designed to teach and spark young imaginations, and adults might learn a few things too.

3. All Aboard in Hamlet

Since 1897, the town of Hamlet has been a center of railway activity. Seaboard Air Line Railroad trains still pass through daily, and its historic Queen Anne-style station welcomes passengers and is home to the Hamlet Depot and Museums, featuring interactive exhibits, model railroads and railway history.

The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer is not your typical museum.

Close by is the National Railroad Museum, which showcases the period in America when passenger trains were the main means of long-distance travel. To see what life was like for railroad crews, tour the restored 1924 caboose on display in Main Street Park. The town also honors native son John Coltrane and the Seaboard connection with expressive downtown murals.

4. Explore Ellerbe

If you’ve ever wanted to see the world’s largest strawberry, head over to the Berry Patch in Ellerbe, where the 24-foot berry rules. You’ll also enjoy homemade ice cream, fresh fruit and local produce. A short distance away in downtown, colorful murals illustrate local history and brighten the walls of Ellerbe’s buildings.

Also plan to visit the Rankin Museum of American Heritage, where you’ll find an impressive collection of Native American artifacts. But for wrestling fans, the main event is a tribute to famous former resident Andre the Giant, who settled in the area in the 1970s.

5. Rich in History

Richmond County traces its history back to 1779, but even further when considering the Native American presence going back centuries.

6. Outdoor Adventure

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do in Richmond County. Take the 14-mile Hitchcock Creek Blue Trail for fishing, boating, walking, biking and other family-friendly activities. Head over to the Hamlet City Lake for 40 acres of kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing, as well as its extensive walking trails, picnic areas and playground.

Plus, explore the range of other parks and recreation areas that dot the countryside.

7. Downtown Rockingham

Rockingham, the largest town in Richmond County, is the downtown destination for local shops and boutiques. Browse the stylish home accessories and antiques at Willow Tree.

When your taste buds call, both Henry’s Uptown Café and the Holiday are local institutions, while Kool Kakes Bakery & Café is renowned for its vibrant baked goods, berry bowls and rolled ice cream. Arts Richmond is a local hub for creative expression that supports local artists and their work.
