Last year marked the first time in 75 years that the North Carolina State Fair was canceled. But it’s back for 2021, and fair manager Kent Yelverton promises “it will be worth the wait.”
In fact, says Yelverton, “Worth the Wait” is the theme for the 2021 North Carolina State Fair. “The public, the vendors and the staff are all looking forward to the return of the fair,” he says. “While we were very pleased to have been able to still offer the junior livestock show and a takeout fair food event last October, everyone missed the opportunity to get together and fully celebrate agriculture. We’re excited that it will happen this year, and we’re ready to welcome everyone back to safely share the fun.”
Here are six great opportunities to learn more about agriculture and share the fun:
North Carolina State Fair Livestock Competitions

While still able to host the N.C. State Fair Youth Livestock Competition last year, the N.C. State Fair will now feature the full complement of livestock competitions with an extended format. To facilitate distancing inside the buildings and to allow for a smoother logistical process, the livestock shows will take place from Oct. 9 through Oct. 24, outside of the traditional fair dates. The N.C. State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will remain on the traditional first Sunday of the fair (Oct. 17), but the Junior Livestock Sale of Champions will move to a new day, Friday, Oct. 22, just after the last market swine show.
