We get all types of weather in North Carolina, and each changing season brings different weather-related challenges. Winter can be one of the most challenging with cold temperatures and the possibility of snow and/or ice, all of which could result in having to file an insurance claim. Taking actions to prepare for winter hopefully decreases the risk.
Snow and ice make travel dangerous and difficult. The best advice has always been to stay at home unless you absolutely must travel. But, if you must drive, reduce speed, make sure your windows are clear and defrosted for visibility, allow for greater stopping distances, don’t slam on your brakes but apply them slowly or pump the brake pedal, and allow extra travel time. Remember, at-fault accidents and collision claims can result in insurance points, causing your rates to increase.
Trees can cause substantial damage, especially in the winter months. Windy conditions plus the weight of snow and ice can cause trees to fall or limbs to break off, damaging vehicles and property. A way to avoid claims of this type is to monitor trees that are close to structures, driveways and garages. Sometimes it is as simple as pruning overhanging limbs, while other times might require cutting some trees down. There could be some costs involved, but in the long run that might be better than suffering extensive damage to your property and having to file an insurance claim. Falling objects are a covered peril under most, but not all, property policies and would fall under the heading of comprehensive or other than collision, which is an optional coverage, under the automobile policy.

Reduce Your Risk During Winter Storms
Performing preventive maintenance on your heating system is another recommendation. If temperatures get really low, freezing pipes could become an issue. Covering water spigots and insulating any water pipes that might be exposed to the elements can help reduce the chances of pipes bursting. Water damage coverage varies depending on the cause and might be excluded altogether depending on the type of policy.
Taking precautions and preventative measures to prepare for winter is a good idea, but accidents and damage from storms are going to happen, which is the reason for insurance. Read your policy so that you know and understand the coverage provided.
If you have questions or concerns about your policies and the coverage they provide, feel free to come by one of our local offices or reach out by phone to a Farm Bureau agent.
