In an effort to help advance STEM education and teacher leadership, the New Hanover County Farm Bureau helped support 2016-17 Kenan Fellow Stephanie Titzel.
Titzel teaches eighth-grade science at Roland-Grise Middle School in Wilmington. She is working on a project called “Surf and Turf: Oysters, Fin sh and Horticultural Research,” where she’s learning more about research that’s advancing aquaculture and horticulture in North Carolina.
After she completes her fellowship, Titzel will develop lesson plans for the Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom curriculum and teach students more about the different agricultural careers available to them.
Titzel says she’s always looking for new ways to get students more excited about STEM and believes that her project will help to actively engage students. Melissa Hight of the New Hanover County Farm Bureau says she knows that Titzel’s research will not only help students in the county learn more about North Carolina aquaculture, but will bene t the state as well.
Titzel and other Kenan Fellows remain teaching in the classroom while completing their year-long fellowship, as well as a summer internship. They receive a $5,000 stipend and are required to participate in 80 hours of professional development.
