On the Local Level

Randolph County

The Randolph County Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee hosted a Farm Safety Day on Sept. 24, 2017. Several experts made presentations including chain saw safety, grain bin safety, power take off safety, rollover protection and transporting agricultural products and equipment safely on North Carolina roads and highways. Kyle Cashwell, a farm accident survivor, also spoke to the group. This event was attended by farmers, first responders and firefighters.

Polk County

With the generous support of Polk County Farm Bureau, Polk County’s Office of Agricultural Economic Development hosts a monthly Friends of Agriculture Breakfast for farmers, gardeners and food enthusiasts. The Friends of Agriculture Breakfast is a free event that features a delicious local food breakfast and an educational speaker on areas of interest to the agricultural community. Past speakers and topics of conversation have included:

  • “Hot New Crops: Should You Grow Them?” by Jeanine Davis, associate professor and extension specialist in NC State University’s Department of Horticultural Science.
  • “Cultivating Abundance: Using Design to Grow More Food Where People Live” by Chuck Marsh, president and senior permaculture designer with Living Systems Design.
  • “Utilizing Cover Crops and Winter Grain Production to Build Better Soils and Increase Profits” by Dr. Brian Ward, research specialist with Clemson Coastal Research and Education Center.
