In 2013, the Hertford County Farm Bureau supported the Hertford County 4-H Summer Fun Farm to Fork Cooking School. During the week, 4-H members worked in groups to learn about eating healthy, cooking in the kitchen and discovering how sweet potatoes grow. They traveled to Johnny Powell’s farm near Harrellsville to learn about his local sweet potato operation; the State Farmer’s Market in Raleigh to identify fruits and vegetables; and Ham Farms/Ham Produce Co. in Snow Hill, where they saw sweet potato production on a much larger scale, including the grading and packaging of sweet potatoes for stores and restaurants.

At the end of the week, they gave group presentations at the Winton Farmers Market to demonstrate what they had learned. The youth also prepared healthy samples of fresh fruits and vegetables, including sweet potatoes, for the public to try while visiting the market. Each participant indicated they learned something they would be able to share with a family member or a friend.
