What Role Does the Farmer Play in Food Safety?
We asked third-generation farmer Doug Patterson from Mount Ulla, North Carolina, what role the farmer plays in food safety.

Patterson Farm Inc. is a large fruit and vegetable farm, and we follow careful methods and procedures for all our practices with the goal of making our produce as safe as possible. It takes hard work and vigilance to operate safely. Testing is a constant on our farm – we test our irrigation water and wash water, and we test our packing equipment after we clean it.
We undergo third-party audits on our farms, fields, packing house, storage coolers and employees to verify that we are properly completing the safety processes and procedures that we have in place. All the products we harvest that are shipped or sold from our farm can be traced back to the day, to the field and, in some instances, to the worker who handled it. Providing nutritious, safe, high-quality produce to our customers is always our top priority.
About the Farmer: Doug Patterson is a third-generation farmer who grows produce along with his family in the Mount Ulla community. He’s also president of Rowan County Farm Bureau and a member of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Board of Directors.
