Ready to Read
Mitchell County Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee is participating in the Ag in the Classroom Book of the Month Program. Each month, Sheila Speight and Sherry Bartlett read the book two separate times to classes in the local elementary schools and at the two public libraries in Mitchell County. This program helps teach children about the importance of agriculture. Once the books are read, they are donated to the classroom or library.

Legislative Breakfast
On March 6, Wake County Farm Bureau held the organization’s annual Legislative Breakfast. The event was held at Pam’s Farmhouse Restaurant, a Southern-style restaurant in Raleigh featuring North Carolina products. In total, 106 WCFB members, NCFB staff, local legislators, FFA officers and other ag leaders gathered for breakfast and to discuss agricultural concerns on the local, state and federal levels.
Showing Appreciation
Northampton County Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day at Central Elementary School in Jackson. They presented gift bags to 25 teachers in appreciation for all they do for their students. They also sponsored a Wish List Drive and collected supplies for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville while their children are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Supporting FFA
In February, the Jones County Board of Directors presented Jones Senior High School ag teacher Christopher Hicks with an Ag in the Classroom Grant during an FFA meeting. The board members interacted with FFA students, discussed their farming operations and experiences, and toured the school. The board says it was a very rewarding experience to see the kids and their donations at work.
Pansy Planting
Polk County Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee has been working with Polk Central Elementary School’s PEAK after-school program for many years and on many projects. For the most recent big project, the committee helped plant pansies in the garden beds outside of the program building. Going forward, the beds will be used to plant many things as a way to beautify the space and create a welcoming environment for the students.
