Steeped in nature and small-town charm, Stanly County is also 45 minutes from Charlotte and only a few hours from the Great Smoky Mountains to the west and the coast to the east.

Strike It Rich at This Historic Mine
To strike gold, you need only go as far west as Cabarrus County – Stanly County’s neighbor. The first documented discovery of gold in the U.S. happened right there at Reed Gold Mine, and North Carolina became a leader in gold production in the first half of the 19th century. You can still experience the excitement of the gold rush at Reed Gold Mine when you take a guided tour of the mine, pan for gold and watch the demonstration of mining machinery.
