BEAUFORT COUNTY Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers & Ranchers hosted a field day for agriculture students on Nov. 2, 2011. About 115 students from Pungo Christian Academy, Southside, Northside and Washington high schools attended. The students visited a cotton field, where YF&R members told them about the history, statistics and life cycle of cotton, and the changes in technology that have helped advance cotton production. Gaylon Ambrose, Beaufort County Extension Service agent, demonstrated cotton ginning with a small-scale cotton gin and the students had the pleasure of seeing the crop harvested by one of the newest cotton pickers on the market. Agriculture safety was strongly emphasized throughout day. Fox Fire Farms, NBE Farms and area agribusinesses helped make this project possible. The proceeds from the harvested crop will be the seed money for a scholarship fund for graduating students in the county who wish to pursue a career in agriculture.
