Dellinger Grist Mill

The Dellinger Grist Mill on Cane Creek, just east of Bakersville in the community of Hawk, has been in the family since Reuben Dellinger built it in 1867. However, it remained dormant for some 42 years until Jack Dellinger began restoring the mill in 1997. The following year, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill once again became operational in 2000. Today, Jack Dellinger continues the traditions of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather by using the original waterwheel, granite millstones, gears, and pulleys they used before him, and using the techniques he learned as a child from his father. Dellinger grinds mountain-grown corn to make cornmeal, grits and polenta, which are sold at the mill. He also offers tours of the mill and each August hosts the Music Festival at the Dellinger Grist Mill featuring local bluegrass musicians.
