farm safety

June officially kicks off the summer season, but the month is more important than just barbecues and beach trips. Each June, the National Safety Council sponsors National Safety Month with a focus on safety awareness to reduce causes of death and injury at work and on the road.

National Safety Month is particularly important for rural communities, as farm injuries are not uncommon with the heavy machinery and equipment farmers use daily.

Many farmers have off-road vehicles for both work and recreational purposes. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when operating ATVs: Know your skill level and don’t exceed your own capacities. Without proper training, it’s easy to lose control even if you think you know what you’re doing. ATVs aren’t designed for jumps, stunts or wheelies – leave that to the pros.

Safety is important to remember when you’re on a public road, too. As the No. 1 cause of unintentional deaths, almost 100 people die in car crashes every day. When operating a vehicle, remember to leave the phone alone. Even hands-free devices can distract drivers, and one call isn’t worth a life. Don’t ever drive without a seat belt, and never drink and drive any type of vehicle – a car, tractor or even a bicycle.
