Take a compelling look at the lives of Black tenant farmers in North Carolina’s Piedmont region with Shared Crop, a companion book to the Shorty Lawson Museum in Hurdle Mills.

Created by designer and educator Randolph T. Hester and illustrated by outsider artists, the book preserves the stories of Shorty Lawson and his family, who farmed during the Jim Crow era. The museum in the rehabilitated Lawson family home features six immersive rooms that blend storytelling, art and artifacts.
Plan your visit at shortylawsonmuseum.org. Hester’s partner in this effort is the Person County Museum of History in downtown Roxboro. Learn more at pcmuseumnc.org.
