North Carolina restaurants that source local are getting the chance to battle it out for the title of “Best Menu” this summer.

A new contest, “Dig into Local” Best Menu N.C. is a new effort from the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as an expansion of its foodservice programs, Got to Be NC and Savor NC.

The contest is intended for restaurants that use locally sourced fruits, vegetables, seafood, meats and other ingredients on their menus. They will be judged on several criteria, including clearly identifying N.C. products, farms and manufacturers, highlighting seasonal produce, offering N.C. wine and beer, and more.

Restaurants interested in entering can submit their applications by May 31 and department staff will visit each restaurant to evaluate their menus between June and September. The top 10 will be announced in October, with the top five restaurants receiving cash prizes.
