We asked Sampson County farmer Tammy Peterson why farmers do agritourism in addition to their existing farming operations.
“Agritourism allows farmers to welcome the public and create meaningful connections between people, the food they depend on and agriculture. It gives families and school groups the opportunity to experience a farm firsthand, enjoy open spaces and step away from crowded cities.

Agritourism Opportunities Abound in Alamance County, North Carolina
Alamance County agritourism offerings set the stage for memorable family adventures. For our farm, adding agritourism was also personal. I was raised on this farm, but agriculture had changed by the time we returned to run it. We continued raising hogs but also sought new avenues to support the farm and our family. Agritourism gave us a way to do that. It allowed our son to grow up like I did, learning responsibility and building a work ethic through working on the farm.
Agritourism also helped us keep the farm active and open by provided an additional revenue stream that helps sustain our farm. As agriculture continues to change, diversification becomes more important than ever.”
About the Farmer: Tammy Peterson and her husband, John, opened Hubb’s Farm agritourism business in 2008. The Sampson County farm is on land that has been in her family for more than four generations.
