Gaston County is Christmas Town & More
Every holiday season, people from all over descend upon Gaston County to satisfy a primal need for holiday cheer. The county’s history is in the now-defunct textile industry, but today, this bustling mix of metropolis and outdoor splendor is a thriving exercise in reinvention. Two holiday hot spots – McAdenville and Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden – attract the masses with their uniquely different but equally pleasing light displays. However, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Gaston County, which comprises 15 incorporated towns ranging in size from the city of Gastonia to the tiny village of Dellview.
In addition to the holiday displays, there’s plenty to do. Pop into Belmont for some last-minute shopping on historic Main Street. Stroll along the grounds of Belmont Abbey College and experience gothic architecture. Choose from 11 different trails at Crowders Mountain State Park, which offers challenging hikes and a vista clear into Charlotte. Or venture out to Veronét Vineyards and Winery for vino with a view.

1. Christmas Town USA
It’s just not Christmas without a visit to McAdenville, also known as Christmas Town USA, a tiny textile town turned holiday magnet. Every December, thousands visit this cozy community just west of Charlotte to drive along the 1.3-mile route and ooh and ahh over the exquisitely decorated homes and well-lit trees. Or park in one of four designated lots and enjoy the magic on foot, with the church chimes ringing cheerfully in the night. It all ends with a majestic view of the lake, ringed with 33 decorated trees and an illuminated fountain.
2. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden
One of the most creative corners of Gaston County, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, offers the perfect escape any time of year. Winter adds a special sparkle with Holidays in the Garden, an artistic holiday lights display that will make your jaw drop. By day, you can wander along the pathways and take in the natural beauty of 110 acres of gardens with names such as Four Seasons, Lost Hollow, Dry Piedmont Prairie and Canal Garden. By night (from 5 to 9 p.m. through Jan. 3), watch as the garden is transformed into a collection of lights shaped into floral displays that rival nature itself. Revel in the fresh crisp air until your nose tingles, then go inside for a hot cup of cocoa and to see the Christmas Village (above).
3. The Schiele Museum of Natural History
Originally called the Gaston County Museum of Natural History, the museum traces its roots to 1961, when avid naturalist Bud Schiele encouraged Gastonia to let him share his vast collection of rocks, minerals and wildlife with the public. Now a staple of the community, the museum annually delights schoolchildren with field trips and summer camp offerings. The Schiele Museum’s James H. Lynn Planetarium and Science Theater, the second-largest planetarium in North Carolina, is a must-visit for families.

5. Crowders Mountain State Park
There’s nothing like a hike under Carolina blue skies to clear your head and burn some calories after overindulging. Crowders Mountain is home to 11 trails of various difficulty levels, offering choices for the experienced hiker or families just wanting a good stroll. For those looking to be challenged, hike the Pinnacle. “Crowders Mountain, specifically the Pinnacle trail, is one of my favorites to hike,” says Heather Fowler, who lives in nearby York County and travels frequently to Gaston to satisfy her hiking needs. “I love the challenge of it – because, honestly, some parts are pretty tough – and the view you receive for your efforts is spectacular.
6. Holiday Shopping
In need of a last-minute gift? Look no further than bustling Belmont. Wander along historic Main Street and peek into shops such as Gigi’s Boutique and Fine Consignment, Jolie Boutique and Surprise Me. You don’t have to go far to find fine food and drink. Gastonia is home to an eclectic collection of establishments, including Gaston Pour House, Lotus Bar & Eatery, Viva Tequis Taqueria & Cantina, Sprouts Café, The Bottle Tree and more. Visit each online to see what style of delish you prefer.
