We’re wrapping up a wet winter, and I am excited to see North Carolina turn a beautiful bright green with the start of another springtime. A lucky few of us will get to watch our state “spring” back to life from the farm, and I hope you find some time and a place to enjoy the show Mother Nature puts on this time of year. I recommend a visit to a farm!
As I write this today, though, my thoughts go back to the snowy mountains of Salt Lake City, where 4,500 American Farm Bureau members gathered for the 105th American Farm Bureau Convention at the end of January.

For the second year in a row, I was honored and humbled to accept a Pinnacle Award on behalf of our dedicated volunteer leaders. The Pinnacle Award is the highest honor American Farm Bureau presents to state Farm Bureaus in recognition of program and membership achievement. North Carolina Farm Bureau is always well-represented at the national level through Young Farmers & Ranchers competitions, policy development and participation in the Women’s Leadership Program. More than that, though, spending time at the American Farm Bureau Convention offers farmers a chance to make friends and network toward gaining insight into the big picture of agriculture nationwide.
While awards are appreciated, I’ve never met a Farm Bureau member who was thinking about getting an award when they left the farm to advocate for an issue or to visit an elementary school to read an agriculture story to a classroom of kids.
However you enjoy celebrating spring, I hope you’ll include a visit to a farm and get to know a farmer!

Was a great convention and what seemed to be a thread through all the meetings and workshops was this; Farm Bureau is for All Farmers. Do not overlook the farmers who are not traditional. They need us and we need them. Reach out to those who are striving to be successful in a specialty crop, or with new technology. Remember tractors were new technology a few generations back. Together we can be invincible and everyone eats!!
