Tropical Storm Helene swept through Western North Carolina in late September, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Our fellow North Carolinians are facing damaged or destroyed homes, farms and businesses. But in true NC spirit, communities are coming together to help those in need.
Here’s how you can help in the North Carolina flood relief efforts:
Donate to Reputable Organizations
Many organizations are on the ground providing essential resources like food, water, shelter and cleanup assistance. Even a small contribution can have a big impact. Consider donating to organizations like:
- Baptists on Mission: North Carolina Disaster Response volunteers will serve in communities as conditions allow. If you are interested in serving in flood recovery, chainsaw and temporary roof repair, you can volunteer on the organization’s website.
- North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund: The North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund is now accepting contributions to help meet the needs of tropical storm victims.
- American Red Cross: You can make an online donation or give by texting Helene to 90999.
- Samaritan’s Purse: The organization is responding to the High Country (northwestern North Carolina) and eastern Tennessee. Volunteers are also needed for deployment starting Sept. 30.
- The Salvation Army of the Carolinas: The Salvation Army is responding to the disaster by providing emergency aid, food, drinks, emotional and spiritual care, and critical supplies to survivors and rescue workers. You can make a donation here.
- World Central Kitchen: This organization provides meals in response to humanitarian, climate and community crises. You can make a donation here.
- Operation Airdrop: Operation Airdrop is delivering supplies, meals and support to those impacted by the storm.
Volunteer Your Time
If you’re in the area, consider volunteering your time to help with cleanup efforts or offer support to those displaced by the storm. Check with local authorities or volunteer organizations like United Way of North Carolina and BeLoved Asheville for opportunities.
Support Local Farmers
The storm has severely impacted crops and livestock in the area. Keep up with North Carolina Farm Bureau and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture for the latest updates on how you can help support local farmers in the days and months ahead.

Important Reminders
- Be mindful of scams: Unfortunately, natural disasters often bring out scammers. Only donate to trusted organizations and be wary of unsolicited requests for money.
- Prioritize safety: If you’re in the affected area, follow the guidance of local authorities and prioritize your safety.
