Now more than ever, we all need a reason to celebrate the traditions that bring us together. And food is one of those things we all have in common. It connects us to one another, teaches us about our roots and shapes our culture. North Carolina chef and author Vivian Howard explores this bond we share through food in her new television series, “Somewhere South,” premiering on March 27 on PBS stations nationwide.

Somewhere South

The six-episode series takes Howard to communities across the American South, into gardens, churches, restaurants and kitchens, to spotlight the power that food has to connect all Southerners, no matter where we come from. The series uncovers some of the lesser-known roots of Southern food, tracing the history of classic Southern dishes from where they originated to how we eat them today.

Howard also digs deeper into cross-cultural dishes to take a look at the ways Southerners have adapted them to express their own backgrounds and identities in the kitchen. Episodes explore everything from hand pies – and their historical link to labor and migration – to porridge, dumplings, barbecue and more.

Howard’s passions for food, history and storytelling bring the series to life as she takes viewers on a culinary tour of the South. Through exploring the history behind the classic foods we all know and love, “Somewhere South” reveals how, as both Southerners and Americans, the food on our tables brings us together.

Tune in to watch the first episode of “Somewhere South,” premiering Friday, March 27, 2020, on PBS stations across the country at 9 p.m. EST.
